Himalayan or Tibetan Singing Bowls? Understanding the Bowls Behind Sound Meditation

You've probably heard the sound before. A soft strike. A long resonance. A sound that seems to contain several sounds at once.

Himalayan singing bowls, also commonly referred to as Tibetan singing bowls, are metal bowls that produce sound when struck or played around their rim.

Why does a singing bowl make sound?

When a bowl is struck or played around its rim, the metal vibrates. Those vibrations create changes in the surrounding air, which our ears perceive as sound. What makes the experience interesting is that the bowl doesn't simply produce one clean note. Its vibration creates a complex, layered tone.

Why are singing bowls used in meditation?

A singing bowl gives you something very simple to listen to. Instead of trying to force your mind to become quiet, you can place your attention on the sound. Notice its beginning. Notice its layers. Notice how it changes. And then notice what happens when it disappears.

Himalayan or Tibetan?

You'll see both terms used widely. At Sound With Sri, we use Himalayan singing bowls and Tibetan singing bowls because both phrases are commonly used when people search for and talk about these instruments. What matters most for the experience is not the label, but the quality of listening.

Next time you hear a singing bowl, listen for the layers.
